October 17, 2019Increase in Livestock Theft in Panama
May 1, 2020This year has seen a significant boost in genetic research into Colombian beef breeds. The investment of livestock farmers in these studies has led to a series of crucial discoveries that aim to improve the adaptability of specialized breeds to the tropics, ensuring their resistance in the Colombian environment.
Nelson Lombana, a veterinarian, emphasizes the importance of preserving the genetic base of the original breed, highlighting the improvement in meat quality when a percentage close to 100% of the genetics is achieved. These advances have translated into a focus on Zebu crossbreeds, such as the Brahman, to obtain animals adapted to the local climate and with optimal quality.
Research has been intensified through reproductive biotechnology, especially in breeds such as the Wagyu, multiplying the genetics of elite animals and promoting crossing programs for meat production. Likewise, ranchers have diversified crossbreeding, highlighting the combination with breeds such as Angus, Brangus, Senepol, and Simmental to enhance different desirable characteristics.
With a focus on meat quality and genetic growth, a significant increase in head numbers of breeds such as Wagyu, Simmental, and Swiss Brown is projected for next year. This advance reflects the trend of Colombian livestock farming towards accelerated genetic improvement and greater diversification of breeds, promoting quality in the country’s premium segment.
