September 18, 2020Western Australia’s successful annual Fitzroy Crossing Bull Sale event overcame all obstacles this year despite COVID-19 restrictions and dry conditions. With sales almost reaching a million dollars, the event, which months ago was in doubt, managed to gather 157 head of cattle from the best cabins in Queensland to be auctioned last Friday.
Despite the lower attendance and the reduction in the number of bulls compared to previous years, the auction attracted large buyers from all over the country. Notable buyers included the likes of Andrew ‘Twiggy’ Forrest of Harvest Road Group and Gina Rinehart of Liveringa Beef Company.
The total average sales reached $5,400, about $800 more than the previous year, demonstrating the genetic quality offered at the sale and the dedication of the northern livestock industry.
Veteran vendor Jimmy Edwards from Queensland expressed his relief to see the event go ahead, although he regretted not being able to attend due to COVID-19 restrictions. Despite the difficulties, the event continues to be a key opportunity for the Kimberley livestock industry, strengthening the relationship between Queensland and Western Australia while highlighting the importance of genetically improving livestock in the region
