October 9, 2020The Ecuadorian province of Manabí celebrated the opening of its first bovine genetic center, the result of collaboration between the Prefecture and the Higher Agricultural Polytechnic School of Manabí (Espam). With an investment of USD 115,012.57, this project seeks to enhance the livestock diversity of the region.
This new laboratory, inaugurated on Thursday, September 17, focuses on introducing high-performance breeds to the area, especially those dedicated to dairy production, such as gyr, brahman, Swiss brown, girolando, and guzerat.
With the participation of the Manabí Livestock Corporation, the program has been underway since November 2019. This effort seeks to strengthen livestock, facing challenges such as pests, droughts, and floods, to revitalize confidence in livestock activity.
In addition to improving bovine diversity, the project has plans to categorize farms based on their infrastructure and genetics, collaborating to improve productivity. At the same time, the first phase of vaccination against foot and mouth disease has been completed, offering updated information on the health of livestock.
The genetic center marks a milestone in the province, seeking to revitalize the livestock sector and offer new opportunities for local producers.
