November 24, 2020A recent investigation led by the UNA Faculty of Veterinary Sciences has highlighted the devastating economic effect of brucellosis on the country’s livestock. The study, led by doctors Alexander Szwako González and Melissa Tomassi Van Koppenhagen, presented alarming figures: the disease not only shows a high prevalence but could also cause annual losses of up to US$ 40 million in the sector.
Brucellosis, an infectious disease that affects various animal species and humans, has been identified in some livestock establishments with a presence of close to 30%, according to the findings of this work. Calculations based on collected data suggest annual economic losses between $7,800 and $11,000 per 1,000 cows on affected farms. Projecting this situation at the national level, it is estimated that losses would reach 41 million USD due to brucellosis.
The research highlights the urgency of implementing effective strategies to control and prevent brucellosis in national livestock, given its significant economic impact. The results emphasize the importance of addressing this disease to preserve animal health and mitigate the considerable economic losses it generates.
